These are the three most popular reasons we encounter at our Dublin clinic for choosing laser eye surgery.
The number one reason given at our clinic is convenience for sport, especially for contact sports and swimming. Glasses and contact sports don’t mix, and contact lenses can become dislodged in the eye during activity or cause irritation. Those who wish to stay active by going to the gym, running, swimming or doing yoga can also find glasses very inconvenient.
Freedom from the ongoing maintenance of glasses and contact lenses is reason enough for some people to opt for laser eye surgery, and is the second most popular reason given at our practice. Freedom from the daily hassle of putting in contact lenses or keeping glasses clean, dry and fog free is sufficient incentive for many patients.
Many people enjoy a big boost in confidence following laser eye surgery, feeling that their appearance is enhanced by freedom from glasses. While no one should be ashamed or embarrassed to wear glasses, many patients give cosmetic appearance as their primary reason for choosing laser eye surgery and feel that it will improve their overall self esteem.
The alternative to laser eye surgery correction is glasses or contact lenses to correct the vision.
Myopia (short-sightedness) is estimated to affect 20% of the population.
Myopia is a condition of the eye where light focuses in front of, rather than onto, the retina, causing distant objects to seem blurry while closer objects appear normal.
Other symptoms can include headaches and eye strain.
The treatment options for myopia depend on a variety of factors including your age, your prescription and your requirements.
Hyperopia (long-sightedness) is a condition in which light is focused behind, rather than onto, the retina. This results in close objects appearing blurry while objects further away may appear normal. As the condition worsens, objects at all distances may be blurry.
Other symptoms may include headaches and eye strain.
Astigmatism is a type of reactive error in which the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina, resulting in distorted or blurred vision at all distances.
This is caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea, or abnormalities in the sense of the eye.
Other symptoms may include eye strain, headaches and difficulties when driving at night.
The treatment options for astigmatism depend on several factors including your age, your prescription and your requirements.
Presbyopia is a progressively worsening ability to focus on objects in close range, such as difficulty reading small print.
The condition is caused by the hardening of the lens of the eye, which causes the eye to focus light behind, rather than onto, the retina when looking at objects in close range. Presbyopia is common in people from the age of 45 upwards.
